LOC SOUND & FILM ARCHIVES GO TO NEW LOCATION IN CULPEPER
The Library of Congress is moving over 6.3 million items of film and sound recordings to its new facility, The National Audio-Visual Conservation Center , recently completed in Culpeper, VA. A $155 million gift from David Woodley Packard made this new facility reality.
Its 208 seat theater will show vintage films three nights a week, and visiting researchers (who will have access starting in September) can listen to archived recordings in special studios.
Total holdings include 3 million audio recordings, 1.2 million films and videos, and 2.1 million related items (scripts, posters, etc.) The oldest piece of film is a 1894 one by Thomas Edison while the oldest audios are two wax cylinders recorded in 1889.
