DAN REID’S PROGRESS IN THE OLD WEST OF YESTERYEAR
by Mark Bush © 2010
(From Radio Recall, April 2010)

What follows is some research I did a few years back and found very interesting. I marvel that more was never made of young Dan Reid's subsequent adventures as an adult.

Of course, Dan did not become the Lone Ranger; that was his uncle. But Dan's background qualified him for a career in crime-fighting. Most OTR fans know that Dan's mother was named Linda and that she came from Virginia. But what many people do not know is that her maiden name was Linda de Bivar and she was a direct descendent of Spain's national hero, Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar who lived in Spain from 1044 until 1099.

De Bivar is legendary for driving the Moors from Spain after they had invaded the country years before. The Moors were so impressed by his skill as a warrior and tactician that their name for him was El Cid (the master or the lord).

Dan Reid had two famous and legendary figures directly in his lineage, El Cid and The Lone Ranger. After completing his education in the east, Dan wandered about the southwest in search of adventure and wound up in Mexico where banditry and evil-doers ruled with impunity. Then suddenly there appeared a masked rider who thwarted their machinations and restored law and order to the area.

Behind that mask, Dan had created his nom de guerre from his famous Spanish ancestor and the lawless Mexican state in which he rode so he became feared by the superstitious and cowardly bandidos as The Durango Cid.
